Face to Face With the Ugly (aka Celery Root)

Who knew the celery was related to this horrendous-looking thing...

When Husband made an oxtail dish last week, the recipe called for "celeriac" aka celery root (what's that?!). When he came home with a bag of groceries, this alien vegetable nearly freaked me out. Who the heck thought this was okay to eat?!

It actually tasted fine though--celery nuances in a translucent form. A food's tastiness is definitely not based on looks.

What is the ugliest thing you have ever cooked with?

I know celery root isn't the sharpest looking vegetable out there, but you're right, it's got a nice, nuanced flavor. Have you tried it grated raw in a salad (cerleri remoulade) with dijon mustard, mayonnaise and parsley? It's my favorite way to eat this celery root. I like it mashed like potatoes too. Hope you'll try it sometime ;)

I did not know the root of a celery look like that. But I do like celery in my recipes - they can give some good flavor to beef stew and braised oxtail :)

Oh they are ugly but I love celery root. Celeriac is actually not directly related to what we call celery though, just in the same family. :) YUM!! And so glad I finally had time to check out your blog!

Wow, I have never seen this celery root, can you even get them in the market???

Hmm, the ugliest things I have ever cooked with...can't think of anything specific...maybe squid, it's quite ugly, but delicious. Hehe.

I was just staring at celery root in the grocery the other day debating whether I should try one. I didn't have time for this week, but I find it intriguing (same thing with 'buddha hand').

The ugliest thing I've cooked with (ok, so I was with my mom when she cooked it) are 'puffballs'. I grew up on a farm and a puffball is a gigantic soccer ball shaped fungus. I have a pic here. It actually tasted quite good.
